VAT Calculator — Add or Remove VAT (15% Default)

← Ledger HarborThe Creative Island · Island 06

Add VAT to a price, or strip it back out — with Bangladesh's 15% ready as the default.

Bangladesh's standard VAT rate is 15%, but some services and items differ — edit the rate to match your case.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose Add VAT (price without VAT → final price) or Remove VAT (VAT-included price → net amount).
  2. Enter the amount and the VAT rate (15% is pre-filled for Bangladesh).
  3. Press Calculate to see the VAT portion and the final figure.

Example

Service fee 1,000 ৳ + 15% VAT = 1,150 ৳ total (VAT = 150 ৳). Removing: 1,150 ৳ included → net 1,000 ৳ + 150 ৳ VAT.

The formula

add: total = amount × (1 + rate)  |  remove: net = amount ÷ (1 + rate)

What the result means

The VAT portion is what eventually goes to the government — you collect it for them. When removing VAT from an inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate), don't just subtract 15% — subtracting gives the wrong answer (150, not 172.5 on 1,150... in fact on 1,150 the VAT part is exactly 150 with the correct method).

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in Bangladesh?

The standard rate is 15%. Some essentials carry reduced rates and some services differ — the rate field is editable exactly for this reason.

Why divide by 1.15 instead of taking 15% off?

Because the included amount already has VAT inside it. 15% of 1,150 is 172.5, but the VAT portion of a 1,150 bill at 15% is 150 — 15% of the net 1,000. Dividing by (1+rate) finds the true net.

Can I use it for other countries' VAT or GST?

Yes — just set the rate: 5% (Japan GST parts), 10% (Australia GST), 20% (UK VAT), 18% (India GST on services) and so on.

Is my data private?

Yes — all math runs locally in your browser.
